Bees

What They Are

Bees play an important role in pollination and are generally considered beneficial insects. However, when they build hives too close to homes, doorways, attics, or play areas, they can become a concern for families — especially for anyone allergic to stings. In Louisiana, homeowners most commonly see honey bees, bumble bees, and carpenter bees around properties.

Where You’ll See Them

Bees may be found around flower beds, shrubs, decks, and porches. Honey bees may build hives inside voids such as roof eaves, walls, sheds, or hollow trees. Carpenter bees often hover near unfinished wood, decks, fences, or trim, where they may bore small round holes.

Why They’re a Problem

While bees are not usually aggressive unless threatened, they can sting to defend their hive. Nests located near doors, walkways, or high-traffic areas increase the chance of accidental stings — especially for kids and pets. Carpenter bees may also cause damage to exposed wood over time.

How They Get Established

Bees look for sheltered areas to build hives or nest sites — and Louisiana’s warm climate allows colonies to stay active much of the year.
