Centipedes

What They Are

Centipedes are long, slender insects with many legs and a fast, darting movement. Their bodies are usually yellowish-brown and they prefer dark, damp environments. While centipedes can bite if handled, most species found in Louisiana homes are not aggressive and generally try to avoid people.

Where You’ll See Them

Centipedes are often found in bathrooms, basements, laundry rooms, closets, garages, and other humid areas. Outdoors, they live under rocks, mulch, leaves, and logs — and may wander inside when conditions are right

Why They’re a Problem

Even though centipedes help control other insects, their sudden movement and many-legged appearance can be alarming. Seeing centipedes indoors may also indicate that other insects are present — since centipedes feed on pests like spiders and roaches.

How They Get Inside

Centipedes may enter through cracks around doors, foundations, vents, or plumbing lines — especially during wet weather or seasonal changes. Louisiana’s naturally humid climate provides ideal conditions for them to thrive.
