Rats

What They Are

Rats are common rodents in Louisiana, especially in areas near water, older neighborhoods, and places with easy access to food or shelter. The two main types we see are roof rats (often found in attics and higher areas) and Norway rats (more common at ground level or outdoors). Rats are excellent climbers and can squeeze through very small openings to get inside.

Where You’ll See Them

Rats often hide in attics, crawl spaces, garages, wall voids, sheds, and storage areas. Signs of activity may include droppings, scratching noises (especially at night), gnaw marks, nests made from insulation or paper, or grease marks along walls and entry points.

Why They’re a Problem

Rats can damage insulation, wiring, food storage, and stored items — and their droppings may contaminate areas where they nest. Because they are nocturnal and avoid humans, you may not see them right away, even if they’re present inside the home.

How They Get Inside

Rats may enter through roof gaps, vents, soffits, pipes, poorly sealed doors, utility openings, or cracks in the foundation. Louisiana homes with trees close to the roofline, nearby water sources, or older structures are especially attractive to rats looking for shelter.
